Genetic Control of Pitch Canker Response in Southern Pine and Southern Pine Hybrids

چکیده

Fusarium circinatum causes pine pitch canker (PPC) disease and associated symptoms such as resinous lesions, mechanical weakness, crown dieback that may lead to mortality in Pinus Pseudotsuga spp. There are no ameliorative techniques available for the disease, genetic resistance among populations support commercial plantation deployment has not been well characterized. In this study, we characterize control of PPC tolerance (and/or resistance) predict families existing breeding populations: open-pollinated (OP) half-sib control-pollinated full-sib (FS) slash (Pinus elliottii var. Engelm.), OP loblolly taeda L.), advanced-generation hybrid × P. caribaea Engelm. bahamensis, caribaea, hondurensis) using F. isolates obtained from three locations Georgia FL, USA. We describe a new experimental design improves accuracy value predictions, provides more precise parameter estimates, facilitates comparisons within taxa isolates. found strong evidence ratio stem damage by circinatum, especially hybrids. Loblolly hybrids exhibited less than pine. observed spectrum virulence isolate sources, which were equally virulent different taxa.

Silvicultural Considerations in Managing Southern Pine Stands in the Context of Southern Pine Beetle

Roughly 30 percent of the 200 million acres of forest land in the South supports stands dominated by southern pines. These are among the most productive forests in the nation. Adapted to disturbance, southern pines are relatively easy to manage with even-aged methods such as clearcutting and planting, or the seed tree and shelterwood methods with natural regeneration. In addition, most species ...

The Southern Pine Beetle and Pine Forest Ecosystems

Dendroctonus frontalis, the southern pine beetle (SPB), is a highly destructive species of bark beetle that inhabits pine forests in the southern United States and parts of Central America. @6D In natural pine forests, the ecological role of the SPB presumably is to hasten the demise of weak or damaged trees, perhaps creating kindling for fires that contribute positively to the long-term health...

Genetic d ion of fusiform rust and pitch canker disease traits in bblolly pine

Loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) exhibits genetic resistance to fusiforrn rust disease (incited by the biotrophic fungus, Cronartiurn quercuum f. sp. fusifom) and pitch canker disease (incited by the necrotrophic fungus, Fusarium circinatum). In this study, a total of 14,015 loblolly pine cuttings from 1,065 clones were screened in controlled greenhouse conditions to identify phenotypes of clones...

Moisture Content of Southern Pine as Related

Holes 3-1/2 inches deep were bored with a I-inch spur machine bit in southern pine having specific gravity of 0.53 (ovendry weight and volume at 10.4 percent moisture). The bit was rotated at 2,400 rpm and removed chips 0.020 inch thick. For wood moisture contents ranging from ovendry to saturation, thrust was lower when boring along the grain (average 98 pounds) than across the grain (average ...

Visual Preference Models of Southern Pine Stands

Statistical models explaining students' ratings of photographs of withinstand forest scenes were constructed for 99 forest inventory plots in east Texas pine and oak-pine forest types. Models with parameters that are sensitive to visual preference yet compatible with forest management and timber inventories are presented. The models suggest that the density of sawtimber-sized trees and the prop...
